WHAT IS QUANTUM TECHNOLOGY?

At the smallest physical scale, the laws of physics differ from our daily life. Atoms and photons are governed by different physical phenomena, such as superposition and entanglement. Despite quantum physics already being around us (lasers, transistors, GPS), researchers just became able to control these phenomena at an unprecedented level, and started to think on the next step which will impact our future: the second quantum revolution.

 

The emerging field of quantum technologies encompasses four application areas, namely quantum communication, quantum simulation, quantum computing, and quantum metrology and sensing. Some of the new improvements that quantum technology promises are more reliable navigation and timing systems and more secure communications.

 

Quantum computing algorithms can be applied in several sectors, such as material science, healthcare, and financial markets.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? 

Quantum technologies are going to revolutionise our society and our businesses. As we are still in the early development phase of this emerging technology, there will be disruptive applications that we are not even starting to envision yet. There is a vast list of opportunities already identified, but, as with any other emerging technology, ethical implications shall also consider the risks.

In the field of quantum technologies, a global risk could be the unjust beneficial distribution of the technology. For example, imagine that just one country in the world (or one company) builds a very powerful quantum computer, able to solve problems of huge complexity

 

Should this computer be used to help society as a whole to treat global problems, such as climate change, resources distribution, or vaccine development, or should this computer be used for whatever the owner, being a nation or a company, wishes to use it for, say for military purposes? These are just a few examples of the implications new quantum technologies could have on the planet.
